Meet Madeline:

Madeline Stenersen is a licensed psychologist, researcher, and advocate for sustainable development based in St. Louis, MO. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from University of Memphis and completed her T32 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Prevention and Community Research at Yale University School of Medicine. Madeline brings expertise in community-based participatory and big data methods. She has extensive experience in program development and evaluation, working with small to mid-sized organizations develop and maintain non-intrusive data collection and analysis systems to support grant applications and evaluation. She particularly loves to work with organizations to brainstorm and figure out how data can be used to validate the outcomes that they are seeing anecdotally (i.e. the changes you see in peoples’ lives) and subsequently used to fund programs and build capacity! Madeline’s Work

Madeline's work focuses on using community-based participatory and big data methods to address health disparities among marginalized communities and populations in the United States and abroad, particularly those involved in the sex industry, LGBTQ+ communities, and the criminal legal system. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Saint Louis University, where she works with organizations to develop, implement, and evaluate programs aimed at decreasing disparities, improving mental health, and preventing violence and exploitation.

Madeline’s recent consultation and collaborative projects have included:

  1. Collaborating with Urban Light Thailand to understand the landscape of online sexual exploitation to build the foundation for an online outreach program.

  2. Partnering with multiple sex worker advocacy groups to understand the impact of health policy on sex workers safety, work, and wellbeing. (the Hustle & Health initiative)

  3. Working with The Foundation United (USA) to create a automatic data dashboard to evaluate human trafficking training for law enforcement

Madeline’s academic research shares the same values and goals as her consulting and she takes seriously the need of academics to understand community advocates and providers. She has over 20 peer reviewed publications and has completed over 50 peer reviewed presentations to academic and community audiences. Madeline’s Services

Creating Non-Intrusive Data Systems

Madeline works closely with her partners to develop and implement non-intrusive data collection and management strategies. This means finding a unique and individualized way to create and analyze data that does not disrupt the work of the organization but fits the organizations unique needs and values.

Objectives for this service can include:

  • Training on data, how to collect it, analyze it, and use it for building funding and capacity

  • Creating a unique data infrastructure (e.g. dashboards, surveys, etc.)

  • Building and implementing data dashboards

  • Evaluating existing data management and evaluation systems

  • Writing and implementing data collection and analysis for grants and research

Training for Clinicians, Staff, and Stakeholders

Madeline’s experience in both research, clinical work, and evaluation allow her to provide in-depth and interactive trainings on multiple topics. Often these trainings can be customized to meet the needs of the organization.

Community-Based Research and Evaluation

Madeline has extensive experience partnering closely with small to mid-sized service organizations to complete research and evaluation projects. This includes creating and implementing research using both quantitative (survey, statistics, data) and qualitative (interviews, observations, storytelling) methods.

Recent research partnerships have included:

  • Working with Urban Light Thailand to collect and analyze surveys on online sexual exploitation among boys, young men, and trans/third gender youth.

  • Collecting interviews with sex workers in the United States regarding the impact of health policy on their lives, work, and wellbeing.

  • Evaluating the impact of human trafficking training for law enforcement.
