Key Findings
- The use of the internet for child sexual exploitation and sex trade is widespread and pervasive, with the majority of respondents engaging in both online and offline sexual activities.
- Nearly two-thirds of respondents (65%) reported experiences of rape or sexual assault, indicating high levels of physical and sexual violence.
- Opportunities for employment, housing, and education are critical to preventing sexual exploitation, as identified by respondents as key factors for intervention.
- Gender norms and expectations present unique vulnerabilities for cisgender males and trans/third gender people in accessing support services, with many experiencing stigma and prejudice.
Methodology
The study employed a mixed-methods approach using respondent-driven sampling (RDS) methodology. Data was collected through an online survey from 94 respondents assigned male at birth, including cisgender males and trans/third gender individuals aged 16-39 years old.
Implications
The research highlights the need for targeted interventions addressing online sexual exploitation, improved support services for male and SOGIE-diverse victims, and the importance of economic empowerment in preventing exploitation. It also emphasizes the necessity of challenging gender norms and reducing stigma in service provision.
